Technology & Process

Beneficial Dredge has created a first-of-a-kind dredge processing system which uses a proprietary slurry (“DredgeCrete™”), and mixing technology uniquely designed to yield the most geotechnically and environmentally stable, homogeneous product for upland beneficial reuse.

Technology

Beneficial Dredge has distribution rights to the DredgeCrete™ Technology to process Dredged Materials. The DredgeCrete™ technology includes the admixture, the slurry plant, and the custom mixer, designed in-house.

DredgeCrete™ Key Features

Delayed Hydration Admixture

Extends the working time of the cement slurry, allowing thorough mixing and the creation of a uniform soil matrix for optimal stabilization.

Efficient Conveyance

Enhanced lubricity improves slurry flow, enabling reliable conveyance from the slurry plant to the mixing equipment using centrifugal pumps.

High Cement Utilization Efficiency

Increased lubricity ensures superior incorporation of cement into the dredge matrix by improving contact between cement particles and dredged material. This maximizes stabilization, reduces contaminant leachability, and solidifies the treated material. With utilization rates of 95%–98%, nearly every cement particle reacts effectively with both the dredged material and targeted chemical constituents.

Elimination of Fugitive Dust Emissions

The DredgeCrete™ slurry process eliminates fugitive dust emissions, minimizing environmental impact and health risks while supporting regulatory compliance.

DredgeCrete™ Benefits

Environmental Compliance

Meets stringent environmental regulations, improves air quality, and both chemically fixates and physically stabilizes contaminants of concern in dredged material.

Operational Efficiency

Lowers processing times and operating costs through high cement utilization and reduced equipment wear.

Quality Assurance

Produces structural fill that consistently meets or exceeds geotechnical performance standards, ensuring the reliability of the end product.

Sustainability

Supports beneficial reuse of dredged material, reduces reliance on landfills, and conserves natural resources by maximizing cement efficiency.

Process

Debris Removal

Beneficial Dredge operates on the north shore of Staten Island at the bulkhead of Cogent Waste Solutions’ Staten Island C&D facility. This location provides direct access to the C&D management tipping platform, with a truck scale located adjacent to the bulkhead, enabling seamless handling. Any construction and demolition debris received by barge is removed, placed into roll-off containers, and managed by Staten Island C&D. Beneficial Dredge can handle marine debris including pier demolition debris.

Preparation of DredgeCrete™

Once debris is cleared, DredgeCrete™ is produced using Beneficial Dredge’s proprietary mix plant. The plant combines water, cement, and a specialized additive to create the slurry.

Delivery and Mixing

Each batch of DredgeCrete™ is pumped over the bulkhead, through a slurry pipe attached to the mixing excavator’s boom, and into the barge, where it is blended with the dredged sediments.

Mixing Methods

Once the barge is free of debris, the RockZone Dual Axial Mixer is deployed to maximize incorporation, producing a uniform mixture of dredged sediments and DredgeCrete™.
